Wedding Cakes 101
If you have recently become engaged, there are many details you will need to figure out for your wedding. Choosing the wedding cake is one of the best parts about planning a wedding. Learn all about wedding cake features so you will be know what you want when you order yours.
Size and shape will be two of the first decisions to make about your wedding cake. Round tiers are most traditional. Couples who like very architectural things can opt for a square tiered cake. You can also consider more unique shapes, such as heart shaped tiers. 3 tiers is the most traditional height, but of course you could have 5 or even 7 tiers for a huge wedding. There are also brides who simply like the style of tall fancy wedding cakes, even if they don't have that many guests. A clever trick is to use styrofoam to create a couple of fake layers to give the cake height without weight or a huge price tag. The frosting will hide the faux layers, and you will save quite a bit.
Then it is on to choosing your favorite flavor of cake. Everyone looks forward to meeting with the baker to sample cake flavors! You can never go wrong with a timeless buttercream cake. It will often feature a filling such as raspberry buttercream or chocolate ganache between the layers. Couples no longer feel bound to have a white cake, with the result that we are seeing a lot more chocolate wedding cakes. Feel free to indulge your sweet tooth with a rich chocolately wedding cake. It makes a fantastic option for an autumn cake. You should keep the time of year in mind when selecting the flavor of your wedding cake. Light flavors like lemon or key lime are delightful for summer weddings, while rich spice cakes or fruitcakes are ideal for a winter wedding. There are also regional preferences which can come into play. Southern brides love a classic red velvet cake with white frosting.
You will then get to decide on the frosting for your wedding cake. You will likely encounter buttercream and fondant as the two chief frosting options, although some brides like something a little different like mocha. Buttercream is quite delicious, and has a bit of a homemade appeal. The main advantage of fondant is how smooth it is. However, fondant is not as tasty as buttercream, so bakers will often put a first layer of buttercream frosting under fondant to improve the taste. The royal icing is popular among British royalty, while a shaved coconut icing would be just right for a beach celebration. A very rich frosting on a gingerbread flavored cake would be heavenly for a fall wedding. Everyone loves chocolate frosting, particularly in the cold weather months.
When you have the main points figured out, you can move on to the really fun part - choosing decorations. Fresh roses, hydrangeas, or other blossoms are always a favorite for cake accents. Gum paste blossoms made to resemble real flowers are a spectacular cake decoration. Of course, the hand made flowers are more expensive than the real ones, so keep your price range in mind when choosing between them. Sometimes brides like to decorate their cake to match their wedding jewelry. Jeweled cake toppers are popular among brides wearing crystal wedding jewelry, while frosting “pearls” are favored by brides wearing pearl bridal jewelry. Marzipan fruit, damask patterns, and rope borders are more beautiful design options. The best part of all is when you step into your wedding reception and see the magnificent cake you helped to design.
