Pick Up Papyrus On Your Sharm El Sheikh Holidays
Papyrus is one of the most popular souvenirs for those on Sharm el Sheikh holidays. Tourists find the paintings depicting Ancient Egyptian scenes and hieroglyphs painted on the thin, durable paper like material, both representative of their holiday and cheap as well. Papyrus is a wetland sedge that was once common in the Nile Delta. Growing from 5 to 9 feet tall, it produced a thick paper like material from its pith which was versatile and used by the Ancient Egyptians to make paper, mattresses, boats, mats, baskets ropes and sandals.
The plant itself has since ceased to exist, but science is looking at ways to bring it back to life. It was first used way back in the time of the First Dynasty and was used extensively throughout the whole Mediterranean region. But there was no records ever found of how to create the special paper from the papyrus plant, however by 1965 an Egyptian scientist work out exactly how to do it. The scientist, Dr. Hassan Ragab, reintroduced the plant back to Egypt from the Sudan and has set up a plantation on Jacob Island, near Cairo. He has also researched different methods of paper production.
On sale in every bazaar and market in Egypt are papyrus paintings and scrolls. The paintings and pictures often reveal different scenes or artwork discovered inside the tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
Visitors on Egypt holidays will most often buy the artworks of King Tutankhamun’s beautiful death mask. You can even get a local artist to paint your name in Egyptian hieroglyphics on a sheet of papyrus. The lowest quality papyrus has ragged edges and machine stamped artwork on it. These will cost no more than one pound, but you will be getting what you pay for. An average sized papyrus with acceptable artwork can be bought for 15 -20 Egyptian pounds, dependant on how good your bartering skills are!
There are organised tour groups for those on Egypt holidays, to papyrus museum and workshops. No matter what price you paid for your papyrus, you can be sure that you have the real thing. Most papyrus bears a government stamp, attesting to its authenticity.
