Frequently Asked Questions...
What types of materials can I use to fill my plaster mold with?
I'm making a sculpture of a planet and I'm going to make the planet out of clay and then use plaster to make a mold out of it. But I am at a loss on figuring out what type of things I can fill the plaster with. I was thinking of using wax, but I don't know if it would come out easily. Does anyone know of or have any suggestions for any types of materials or liquids that I can use to fill my mold with?
Answer:
wax will only come out of plaster if you soak the plaster before so long no air bubbles come out of the plaster any more.
If you seal the surface of the plaster, you could use shellack or just plenty of vaseline you can use plaster to fill it with.
As you have to make a 2 part mold you could also just use each half as a press mold - you press clay into the plaster so it covers the surface. You will have half a sphere in each mold. make sure you cut the rim straight. The you can join two half spheres into a whole sphere. If you use natural clay which contains water wait until the clay is close to leatherhard before you join the halfs so they won't distort much. Slip and score to join halves.
