BP Cut Checks To Fishermen As Oil Spill Devastates The Sea Life

Many fisherman are being sidelined by the BP oil leak as the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico rages. BP has been cutting checks to settle claims for a Gulf fishing industry in limbo, but those payments are a drop in the bucket compared to the oil spill cleanup costs BP has incurred so far. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico 2010 has already fouled about 65 miles of the Louisiana coastline as of Monday. An effort to plug the BP oil leak with a "top kill" may occur Wednesday and Congress is debating BP's oil spill liability. Meanwhile, BP isn't making any friends in Washington as lawmakers expressed outrage at the fact that the oil company continued to use a toxic oil spill dispersant despite directives to find an alternative.

BP oil leak puts fishermen in trouble

The closure of a huge expanse of ocean to commercial and recreational fishing comes as a result of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico 2010. According to CNNMoney.com, more than 23,000 workers and business owners along the Gulf Coast have filed claims for lost income. So far, BP has cut checks for payday cash on 9,000 claims totaling up to $ 27.8 million. Captains on fishing boats have been receiving $ 5,000 a month and deck hands $ 1,000. Damon McKnight, owner of Super Strike Charters, which operates three boats in Venice, La., told CNN that he was expecting to pull in $ 50,000 a month during the gulf fishing season's May to August peak.

Oil spill liability trust fund

BP recently announced that since the April 20 explosion that sank BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, the company has already exceeded $ 350 million, or $ 16 million per day, in oil spill cleanup costs. A law passed in response to the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska makes BP responsible for oil spill cleanup costs. But the law sets a $ 75 million limit on other kinds of damages, such as lost wages. Several Democratic senators, as reported by the Associated Press, introduced legislation Monday to raise the oil spill liability limit to $ 10 billion as it seems more likely that the Gulf Coast economic losses will exceed the current limit. The federal government also maintains an Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund supported by oil industry fees. For individuals, businesses and governments, it can make a total of $ 1 billion in payouts per incident.

Oil spill cleanup outpaced by BP oil leak

Governor Bobby Jindal said Monday that the BP oil leak has reached landfall on about 65 miles of Louisiana shoreline. In hopes to hold back the oil, Gov. Jindal implored the Army Corps of Engineers to immediately approve a plan to build artificial barrier islands out of sand, as reported by the New York Times. Based on a figure given by a senior BP executive to members of Congress in a closed-door briefing on May 4, estimates of the quantity of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico 2010 range from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association's 6.3 million gallons to a BP worst case estimate of 82.7 million gallons.

Method used in oil spill cleanup is highly toxic

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico 2010 cleanup struck a hitch Monday as government officials wrangled with BP over its failure to meet response effort deadlines. BP is under a lot of tension right now after refusing to discontinue use of a toxic dispersant to break up the oil slick. There were no less toxic alternatives, as BP claims, and so the company prepared a top kill to plug the ruptures well. Also reported by the New York Times, since the BP oil leak began more than a month ago, BP has applied about 70,000 gallons of the dispersant in the gulf – the largest quantity of dispersant ever used on an oil spill in United States waters. The leak could possibly be stopped on Wednesday as BP hopes the top kill - pumping heavy liquid into the well - may just do the trick.

Frequently Asked Questions...

How can I encourage my daughter's fascination of sea life?

Sylvie is two years old and fascinated with sea life. We've been watching a lot of nature shows, reading about sea life and we've been to the aquarium to see the fish. We have even bought her a fish tank full of colourful fish and she loves it. She can't stop talking about sea life and she can name some of the fish in her tank. Is there any other ways I can encourage her fasvination of sea life?
It is the animal that is fascinating her. She's never been into colour.

Answer:

make sure she watches little mermaid :)

try to identify whats her real fascination? if the actual sea life, or the colour, the water, the movement, the fact of another animal that is not human.... i just think it is hard for a 2 year old keep this fascination for her all life. especially because i dont think she understand yets the concept of sea life. I am by no way dis-couraging you to encourage her, but i just think you should really identify what exactly fascinates her.
