What You Need To Know Before You Buy A Coffee Maker
Purchasing a coffee maker could pay for itself quickly if you make your own coffee to take with you rather than buy it by the cup.
Coffee makers offer the domestic user consistent, quality coffee, at a fraction of the cost of a cup from a high street chain. Manufacturers bring new models to market that offer features previously found only in commercial coffee makers.
Online search results confirm how many different models of coffee makers and machines are now available which can be confusing. However, once you understand that there are only 5 types of domestic coffee makers the information you need to trawl through is reduced significantly.
Automatic or Bean to Cup Models.
Representing the top end. Both ground coffee and beans can be used in many of these bean to cup models. An on board grinder will grind the beans, the coffee is then brewed directly into a cup and used grinds cleanly ejected into a container. Built in frothers are a feature of many of these machines and allows the user to make perfect Cappuccinos.
Capsule or Pod Coffee Makers.
Capsules and pods contain a measured amount of freshly ground coffee which is contained either in a perforated filter bag similar to a teabag, or a vacuum packed capsule which is easily inserted into the coffee maker and neatly discarded at the end. Differing strengths of coffee is available to suit all tastes. This system is preferred by many because there is no used grounds or messy residue to clear away.
Filter.
Filter coffee makers are ideal if you need to make more than one cup at a time and your preference is for a simple cup, or two, of coffee. Models cater for up to 16 cups.
Nespresso Coffee Maker.
One of the most popular methods of preparing coffee. Numerous manufacturers offer this type of coffee maker. The Nespresso coffee maker was made specifically for the capsules patented by Nestle and works by piercing the capsule and forcing hot water through it. The espresso produced is consistently good quality, comes in a variety of strengths and flavours and is fuss and mess free. The capsules contain enough coffee for one espresso and stay fresh for about nine months. Admittedly the coffee produced is probably the most expensive domestic coffee, but much less expensive than the coffee available from high street.
Espresso or Manual Coffee Makers.
This traditional machine is possibly the least expensive option of preparing fresh coffee. A filter holder is filled with ground espresso, locked into the machine and the pump forces pressurised hot water through the coffee grounds. Often referred to as pump machines they produce very strong, short, black espresso which is the base for a number of favourite coffee recipes including Cappuchino, latte or Americano.
Once you have decided which type of coffee maker is most suitable, you simply have to decide which of the manufacturers you wish to purchase from.
