Flower Spray
No Poison Garden Pest Control
Take ten and think about garden pest management. Pest management for the garden can be planned and researched in the dormant winter months. Pesticides will poison all the little and big visitors to your garden, planning ahead with earth friendly products can avoid this.
We often attack pests when we first spot them in our flowers and this knee-jerk approach usually involves harsh chemicals. Take some time now to think about how you want to handle your pest management this summer so you don't have to worry about it when you should be relaxing in your garden.
Slugs can be a terrible garden pest. They make yucky stripes all over the flowers and they make ragged holes in the leaves of garden plants. Yuck. Before you break out the most deadly of slug pellets which will also kill all the snakes, toads and bird feedingcreatures you can try some other things. Turn terra cotta pots over as an easy slug trap-clean them out during the heat of the day. Throw bundles of newspaper in your garden and then pick them up during the day and throw them away. Use soda cans with a few tablespoons of a solution of beer, water and yeast as a crawl in but don't crawl out trap. Scare slugs away by putting coffee grounds around the base of your hostas. These are better than the nerve damaging slug killer you buy at the hardware store.
Japanese beetle, black vine weevil, fleas and cucumber beetles are some more unwelcome guests in your plants. Japanese beetles are unfortunately especially fond of yellow flowered plants...something to keep in mind when choosing colors for the garden. Blame polka dots on your daisies on the striped Cucumber Beetle, and blame jagged rhododendrum leaves on Black Vine Weevil Beetle.
These beetles can be treated with nerve damaging sprays, or you can try the next new wave in pest control and get a head start on saving the planet by investing in some nematodes. Beneficial nematodes are tiny thread like worms that you mix with water and pour around the base of your plants. Spray or pour nematodes around your garden in the evening or on a cloudy day as sunlight will cause them to parish. Beneficial Nematodes are like heat sensing missiles that will hunt down the offending beetle grubs and kill them from the inside out. Nematodes will not harm you or your family.Get those bad beetles with an application of nematodes in the early spring and late fall. Nematodes can be initially expensive but pay for themselves in the second year. Nematodes may also be put on your grass for grub problems. These are like the whole body cure for your garden and the planet.
Aphids will suck the life right out of your roses. Spray them for a once a day for a few days with a heavy jet of water from your garden hose. You can spritz them with some soapy water and oil. Lady bugs and praying mantis are good weapons but not always willing to stay in your garden and get the job done.
Mosquitos are an unwelcome guest in the garden! Citronella oil is an excellent tool for fighting mosquitos. Firepotsfilled withcitronella fuel gelare a key defense against these invasive and unwelcome garden pests!
If you plan ahead you can put these safe pest control applications to work for you in your garden and feel good knowing you are not poisoning the planet's already overstressed ecosystems. Rest easy knowing you are using safe pest management control and not hurting the planet. You are doing the world a favor when you think before you break out the toxic chemicals which kill everything including the honey bees and the butterflies which actually enhance and decorate your garden. Stop and think before you apply pesticides to your garden.
