Is censorship still relevant in todays society?
This point came to me while I was watching Cannibal Ferox with friends the other night. At one point in the film the prisoners of the cannibal tribe are about to be- well, i dont know -that part had been cut out of the movie -so answers on a postcard please people. We have no idea what happened in that scene, but we know it cant have been pretty, all thanks to the bbfc.
So we really need protecting from movies? 25 years on watching these movies we have to wonder why these movies were taken as serious threats to society. Would we all turn into gibbering monsters if we veiwed these movies in their full bloody glory?
The 80s gave usthe video nasties act, not as people say, an attack on free speech, but for many of these films it was the best piece of publicity they could recieve. Banned movies obtain a mythical status because they are banned -were not allow to see them, so we want to see them all the more. Looking at the films that are now coming out 'Saw and 'Hostel', are they any different from what we were seeing from the likes of Driller killer and Cannibal Holocaust way back then? So called 'Uncut' versions of the films which are released on dvd are more of a marketing ploy rather than general censorship.
Wii game Manhunt 2 was banned until the developer blurred out the killings scenes, which only made people want to play it -but the censors shouldnt have worried -after becoming bored with the kill scenes the game has poor controls and little replay value.
Censorship is supposed to 'protect' the public from devient artists -but shouldnt we have the choice over whether to view said entertainment for ourselves? Rather than cutting films to the point of being left with a unitelligible film because of the cuts. To take a quote from the marketing campaign of banned film 'Last house on the left': 'Its only a movie'.
