How Some People Respond To Addictions
Many people struggle with afflictions, conditions, and medical challenges. Families and friends come together to battle back against situations that present more than physical challenges. There are many addictions we may face in our lifetime.
You may work with people who seem fine but in reality are experiencing nearly constant mental and emotional stress. A back massager and jogging may help one. Therapy or prescription drugs may ease another. The point is that pain and anguish relief is personally tailored.
I know a couple that realized they were drinking a lot of alcohol at home. They go to places on the list they made that does not allow that habit. They conduct private cooking classes in the local community together. They attend more movies and spend time at the local library.
There is less alcohol in their home now. They have found ways to substitute healthy habits for bad ones and the lesson is that each person needs to find a way that is comfortable.
Looking through a scrapbook album is therapy for one couple. It chronicles their life and their growth as individuals and as a family. They recall challenges that different members of the family endured and what saved them before it was too late.
Lots of people talk openly about diseases. We can join a discussion group, take part in electronic forums on any subject, or start a local support group. We seem to be comfortable sharing our deeply personal stories.
Some people have experienced feelings of shame when they lose a dear person to a lifestyle of dependency. Parents may question if something they did contributed to the problem. The fact is that people need to speak out rather than shut down when fighting addictions like meth.
Some people would be relieved if their loved one had a horrible medical condition instead of a meth addiction. Living with a friend or family member that has lost their traits to meth can seem like a living death. Our helplessness can feel overwhelmingly real.
Many people are convinced that love and faith are potent weapons to restore our loved ones lives. There is no way to deny that nearly all dependency treatment programs that work recognize the love of our Creator.
The first step is to acknowledge and speak out about the dependency. This can be done effectively when wrapped in love and acceptance. It is nearly impossible to get through life without having to confront a destructive behavior in a loved one.
We can achieve success by increasing our power to prevail over the problem. This can be accomplished by working with others to increase our mental and emotional strengths. Extending cooperation to others confronted with these issues is just as important as reaching the afflicted person.
