The Cutting Edge Of Plastic Bags

Plastic, one  the most versatile materials, has been around for many years. It was first unveiled in 1862 in London's Great International Exhibition as a material of the future. To many the plastic grocery bag may seem simple enough, but it was this bag that made plastic an easily accessible and applicable material in the industrial world.

Over the years, the plastic bag has taken quite a hit from those who are concerned with the state of the environment. However, there have been some attempts in recent years to find a way to change the way that we use plastic and in some cases just the plastic bag. China began with an all out ban on plastic bags slimmer than .025mm and Ireland has placed a tax on every plastic bags used. Australia, along with thirty three London councils are also making plans to place a ban on the thin plastic bags.

Across the North Atlantic, San Francisco has also banned plastic bags while in New York retailers must now provide a place to to store recyclable plastic bags. Seattle is charging a twenty cent tax on the bags as well. With many people seeing that the convenience of plastic bags is now causing an inconvenience, the outlook for plastic bags is not looking good.

Reusable bags are starting to take the place of conventional plastic bags. To use these bags all you have to do is purchase reusable bags and bring them to the store with you when you are out shopping. If you find yourself in an country or area that has banned or taxes plastic bags, you will save a lot of hassle and money by purchasing a reusable bag.

On the plastic bags front, recently there have been new technological advancements. After years of research, scientists have managed to develop a biodegradable plastic that can be used in the manufacturing of plastic bags. The only process that is needed to break down the plastic is heat and the sun. The idea here being that the bags then break down and is able to be digested by microorganisms. With work continuing in this area, it is very likely we will be these new breed of plastic bags in shopping centers soon.

The plastic bag has provided many uses for so many areas of our lives. Most people keep some on hand around the home, whether its for storing or carrying to and from home or as a small temporary rubbish bin. It is undeniable that it is handy to have a couple of them stored somewhere in the house. The only thing that may end up changing is the materials used to manufacture them and their impact on the environment.

When the environment is in question, it is important that we all do our part to find ways to eliminate anything that can cause damage. As research continues it is only a matter of time before the process is perfected and we are all using plastic bags with the same convenience but with no damage to the environment.
