Poplar Lumber

Profits From Firewood For Sale

Knowing which firewood will offer you the finest burn for the buck is straightforward once you discover how the heat values of various hardwoods stack up against each and every other.

They are extremely beneficial devices that take considerably of the work and time out of the production of firewood. Any business that produces firewood for sale commercially requirements a firewood processor to function effectively within the marketplace, as attempting to produce firewood devoid of one is too inefficient to make the business enterprise competitive.

The first benefit of using a firewood processor is speed of processing. These machines efficiently bring the principles of the production line to the lumber yard or factory workshop: they have the capacity to process huge logs promptly and easily. Depending on the model purchased, a number of log sizes are in a position to be handled: most have a mechanism for adjusting the deck on which the log rests although it really is being processed.

For instance, a cord of hickory will yield the heat equivalent of 146 gallons of #2 heating oil. The heating equivalents for other well-known hardwoods are as follows: White oak:135 gals., Beech:130 gals., Red Oak, Hard Maple and Yellow Birch:127 gals., Ash:119 gals., Soft Maple, Black Cherry and Paper Birch:110 gals., and finally Poplar:74 gals.

Very normally a cord of wood provided for sale will include mixed hardwoods.

The second benefit of using a firewood processor is precision. If the logs have all been produced to comparable dimensions employing an automated process, then it is a uncomplicated matter to bundle logs together by weight as soon as 1 log has been weighed. When producing firewood making use of standard procedures (generally resulting in logs of uneven size and weight), every batch of firewood has to be weighed to check it is correct: this is clearly extra time-consuming and much less efficient.

As you may see from the hardwood heating values, a cord of wood comprised mostly of Soft Maple will burn a lot more rapidly than a cord of White Oak and is consequently worth less money.

The third benefit of utilizing firewood processors is in terms of manpower. Now one man (suitably trained) can operate a firewood processor and create large amounts of firewood. Delivering relevant safety procedures are followed, making use of a processor is also significantly safer, resulting in less man hours lost on account of injury. All of this means that staff could be freed up for sales along with other duties, allowing the organization to make earnings and expand.

A cord of wood is not a truckload or a pile dumped in your driveway.

Frequently Asked Questions...

A question about lumber...?

I would like to buy lumber, ideally 1/4"x4"x6', but I can go as thick as 1/2"x4"x6'. Width has to be 4" exact, length has to be minimum 6'. The only cut I can find at my local home improvement store is 1"x4"x6'. Can the store (Lowe's/Home Depot) cut the 1" lumber down to 1/2" or even 1/4" thickness? I am buying poplar, if it makes any difference.

Answer:

A home center doesn't have the equipment, time, or staff to plane lumber down to a specific thickness, so your best bet is to go to a local cabinet shop or other woodworker that has a thickness planer. Because the dimensions you've mentioned are non standard and specific, I'd buy my lumber at the home center and have someone use a planer to mill it down your exact requirements.

Most places have a minimum shop fee and an hourly rate, but it shouldn't be too much for you if you only need a few pieces. Poplar is relatively inexpensive and very easy to machine because it has almost no sap and usually has no knots or other defects. Maybe look on Craig's List and see if anyone has a planer for sale in your area because they might be willing to mill your lumber for less money than a professional shop would charge. Buy your lumber a foot or so longer than the 6 feet you require so you can cut off any snipe (dips) that a planer may put in the end of the boards, too. A skilled craftsman can rip a 1 x 4 down to 1/4", but it requires experience, nerve, and a big enough table saw to accomplish the job, and though it will leave blade marks on one surface of the lumber, it can be done faster than using a planer.
